turboSPOT: Dynamic Performance Scaling for Apollo SoCs

turbospot mobile kv 1

turboSPOT® is Ambiq’s ultra-low power dynamic performance scaling technology. Built on Ambiq’s SPOT® platform, it enables a higher frequency (HP) operating mode for the CPU and memory to run at an elevated frequency. turboSPOT supports 2-level dynamic scaling of the CPU, with seamless, zero-overhead transitions driven by software based on workload requirements.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

    • turboSPOT® is Ambiq’s ultra-low power dynamic performance scaling technology, built on the SPOT® platform. It enables supported Apollo® SoCs to automatically switch between low-power operation and a higher-performance operating mode, allowing the CPU and memory to run at higher frequencies when workloads demand additional processing while maintaining exceptional energy efficiency.

    • turboSPOT® was introduced with the Apollo3 Blue® SoC in 2018 and is now available across multiple generations of Ambiq Apollo SoCs. The technology continues to evolve and is supported on newer Apollo platforms.

    • turboSPOT® provides seamless, software-controlled transitions between low-power and high-performance operating modes with virtually no transition overhead. Applications can increase processing performance for demanding workloads and then return to an energy-efficient operating mode when the workload decreases, helping maximize battery life.

    • turboSPOT® is software-controlled. Developers can dynamically switch between operating modes based on application requirements, enabling intelligent performance scaling for compute-intensive tasks while minimizing power consumption during normal operation.

    • turboSPOT® supports two operating performance levels: a standard ultra-low-power mode for everyday processing and a higher-performance mode that increases CPU and memory frequency for compute-intensive workloads. This enables developers to balance performance and energy efficiency based on application needs.

    • turboSPOT® is built on Ambiq’s SPOT® platform and extends its ultra-low-power architecture with dynamic performance scaling. Rather than operating at a fixed frequency, turboSPOT® allows supported Apollo SoCs to increase processing performance when needed while preserving the power efficiency that defines the SPOT platform.

    • turboSPOT® is available on multiple Ambiq Apollo SoCs, beginning with Apollo3 Blue and continuing across newer Apollo product families. Support will continue to expand as new Apollo SoCs are introduced.

    • turboSPOT® is designed for embedded applications with varying compute demands, including edge AI inference, graphics rendering, digital signal processing (DSP), wireless communication, wearable devices, medical devices, smart home products, and industrial IoT (IIoT) systems. It delivers additional processing performance only when needed, helping extend battery life.
